چکیده

Motivated by denial-of-service network attacks, we introduce the symmetric interdiction model, where both the interdictor and the optimizer are subject to the same constraints of the underlying optimization problem. We give a general framework that relates optimization to symmetric interdiction for a broad class of optimization problems. We then study the symmetric matching interdiction problem – with applications in traffic engineering – in more detail. This problem can be simply stated as follows: find a matching whose removal minimizes the size of the maximum matching in the remaining graph. We show that this problem is APX-hard, and obtain a 3/2-approximation algorithm that improves on the approximation guarantee provided by the general framework. 1998 ACM Subject Classification Categories and subject descriptors: G.2.2 [Discrete Mathematics]: Graph Theory—Graph algorithms, Network problems

Matching Interdiction

In the matching interdiction problem, we are given an undirected graph with weights and interdiction costs on the edges and seek to remove a subset of the edges constrained to some budget, such that the weight of a maximum weight matching in the remaining graph is minimized. In this work we introduce the matching interdiction problem and show that it is strongly NP-complete even when the input ...

The matching interdiction problem in dendrimers

The purpose of the matching interdiction problem in a weighted graph is to find two vertices such that the weight of the maximum matching in the graph without these vertices is minimized. An approximate solution for this problem has been presented. In this paper, we consider dendrimers as graphs such that the weights of edges are the bond lengths. We obtain the maximum matching in some types of...

Interdiction Problems on Planar Graphs

We introduce approximation algorithms and strong NP-completeness results for interdiction problems on planar graphs. Interdiction problems are leader-follower games in which the leader is allowed to delete a certain number of edges from the graph in order to maximally impede the follower, who is trying to solve an optimization problem on the impeded graph. We give a multiplicative (1+ǫ)-approxi...

Parameterized Complexity of Edge Interdiction Problems

We study the parameterized complexity of graph interdiction problems. For an optimization problem on graphs, one can formulate an interdiction problem as a game consisting of two players, namely, an interdictor and an evader, who compete on an objective with opposing interests. In edge interdiction problems, every edge of the input graph has an interdiction cost associated with it and the inter...

Packing Interdiction and Partial Covering Problems

In the Packing Interdiction problem we are given a packing LP together with a separate interdiction cost for each LP variable and a global interdiction budget. Our goal is to harm the LP: which variables should we forbid the LP from using (subject to forbidding variables of total interdiction cost at most the budget) in order to minimize the value of the resulting LP? Interdiction problems on g...
